Why Summer Camp?

John and the Kids

The summer camp is a new installment of Kate's Kids created by Summer Program Director John Pope. It's a great way to engage your child creatively through fun and concentrated theater-centric courses.

The kids have a one- or two-week sessions (depending on the availability of the kids) with a teacher and an assistant. The kids play theater games, clowning exercises, and a final performance at the end of the session. Besides acting, we have lots of options for summer camps including Improv. Camp, Songwriting Camp, and Shakespeare Camp. The more sign-ups we get, the more "specialty camps" we can put up, so sign-up soon!

This is the perfect place to start! We'll be learning about how to write and perform songs! Over the course of camp, each child will develop singing and performance techniques that will lead them to a final performance of their own original song. We'll work on song structure, lyric writing, and musical expression. Great for any kid who wants to take their singing out of the shower, and onto the stage! A Typical Day...

Before splitting into age-appropriate groups (4-6 and 7-11), we start camp altogether with ice-breakers, name games & introduction, building memorization, trust, and observation skills...all great and important skills to build the craft of acting.

At 9:30am, the older kids will go into a neighboring studio so both groups may do age-appropriate acting exercises. We break for morning snack, and then we're back to some more imaginative acting exercises, building more skills such as listening, focus & concentration, and character development.

Lunch happens at 12pm, after which both groups travel outside (weather permitting) to nearby playgrounds at either Washington Square Park or Minetta Playground. Both parks are within a 5-minute walk from the studios.

Free-play lasts until 2 or 2:15pm, and we're back to the studios by 2:30pm, where the kids will continue practicing their team-building, improvisational, listening, focus & concentration, and other acting skills. There will be an end-of-the-session workshop for parents to see on the last day of camp.
